Or, perhaps more accurately, the “Second miracle of Headingley” as, thirty-eight years after Botham’s heroics, Ben Stokes produced one of the all-time great Test innings to rescue England (who had, let’s not forget, been bowled out for just 67 in the first innings) in the third Ashes test against Australia. Coming in at 141 for 3 and with England still needing an improbable 218 to win, Stokes saw England through to the end of day three, then built up momentum throughout day four as his batting partners fell around him. When Jack Leach came in at number eleven England were still 72 short of Australia, at which point Stokes started to cut loose. Eight sixes in an unbeaten 135 to see England home and level the Ashes.
